Northern European nations are frequently ranked among the happiest on the planet, with a wide range of public services and social inclusion. It’s no wonder, therefore, that Scandinavian nations dominate this list of the best countries for women, with just one country outside the area cracking the top five.

The 2022 Best Countries for Women rankings are a companion to U.S. News’ overall 2022 Best Countries rankings, which are based on the results of a global poll of over 17,000 individuals. The ranking of the Best Nations for Women is based on how over 9,000 women questioned linked various countries with five specific attributes: caring about human rights, gender equality, income equality, progressive, and safe.

The 2022 Best Countries rankings, developed in collaboration with BAV Group, a unit of global marketing communications company WPP, and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, are based on a survey of more than 17,000 global citizens to assess perceptions of 85 countries across 73 different metrics.

These are the top five nations.

1. 1. Sweden

Women of Sweden

According to poll results, Sweden is the best country for women for the second year in a row. According to a YouGov poll conducted in 2021, both men and women in the Scandinavian country regard women as oppressed, and Sweden performed well in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report for 2022, placing fifth out of 146 countries in terms of gender parity.

2. 2. Norway

Women of Norway

Norway is regarded as one of the world’s most gender-equal countries, placing third out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report for 2022.

Women benefit from generous parental leave policies: According to the Norwegian Labor and Welfare Agency, eligible parents can take 49 weeks at full pay or 59 weeks at 80% pay.

3. 3. Finland

Women of Finland

Finland, like its Nordic neighbours, received a high score, finishing third among the best nations for women after finishing sixth in both 2020 and 2021.

Women made up 46% of Finnish Parliament members as of early 2021, and the country is governed by female Prime Minister Sanna Marin. Finland has the world’s second-smallest gender gap, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report for 2022.

4. 4. Denmark

Women of Denmark

Denmark fell two places this year to rank fourth in the world for women. The government encourages gender equality by providing subsidised child care and a flexible parental leave policy.

According to YouGov, a market research business located in the United Kingdom, Danes had the fourth-most progressive attitude toward gender among nations questioned in 2021.

5. 5. Switzerland

Women of Switzerland

Switzerland, which is located in center Europe, is the only non-Scandinavian country that will be ranked among the top five countries for women in 2022.

Women in Switzerland were not granted the right to vote until 1971, although their standing has improved in recent years. Switzerland scored 13th out of 146 nations for gender parity in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report for 2022.
