In Bodies – Season 1, four detectives from different time periods—1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053—discover the same unidentified body in the same London alley. Each detective investigates the case, uncovering a complex conspiracy that spans centuries. The victim, a man with a gunshot wound to the eye, connects their stories in unexpected ways.
In 1890, Inspector Hillinghead, a by-the-book officer, faces societal pressures as he delves into the mystery. In 1941, Detective Whiteman, a morally conflicted man, grapples with his own secrets while investigating the corpse. In 2023, DS Hasan, a determined Muslim cop, faces institutional skepticism as she uncovers links to a powerful family. In 2053, Maplewood, a futuristic officer, deals with memory gaps and a dystopian society while piecing together the truth.
As the detectives dig deeper, they uncover ties to a shadowy organization called Mannix Industries, led by the enigmatic Sir Julian Harker. The timelines intertwine, revealing a time-travel plot involving a device called the Throat, which allows people to manipulate history. The body is eventually revealed to be that of Elias Mannix, a key figure in the conspiracy who orchestrated his own death to ensure his rise to power.
The season builds toward a climactic revelation: Maplewood, from 2053, is actually working to undo Mannix’s destructive legacy. The story ends with hints of a larger battle across time, setting up future seasons. The show blends crime drama with sci-fi, exploring themes of power, corruption, and the consequences of altering history.
Paul Tomalin is the primary writer and creator of the British crime and science fiction limited series Bodies, which is directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner and Haolu Wang. It is an adaptation of the same-titled 2015 DC Vertigo comic novel, written by Si Spencer and drawn by Meghan Hetrick, Dean Ormston, Tula Lotay, and Phil Winslade. On October 19, 2023, the eight-episode series made its Netflix debut.
The corpse turns up dead in London’s Longharvest Lane at the beginning of the novel.[3] This incident occurs at the same spot in four distinct years (1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053) and sparks four distinct detective inquiries that ultimately connect and have far-reaching effects.
