Chernobyl is a 2019 historical drama television miniseries based on the 1986 Chernobyl tragedy and the cleaning activities that afterwards. Craig Mazin developed and wrote the series, which was directed by Johan Renck. Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, Emily Watson, and Paul Ritter lead the ensemble cast. HBO in the United States and Sky UK in the United Kingdom produced the series.

While the series was meticulously researched, some dramatic liberties were taken. Each episode was followed by a podcast in which Mazin and NPR broadcaster Peter Sagal discussed the adjustments and their justification.

While historians, experts, and witnesses have pointed out historical and factual errors in the series, the creators’ attention to detail has been widely praised.

Chernobyl dramatises the events of the April 1986 nuclear plant accident in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union, revealing the lives of individuals engaged in the tragedy as well as those who responded to it.

The series covers some of the disaster’s lesser-known storylines, including as the efforts of the first responders on the scene, volunteers, and teams of miners who excavated a key tunnel beneath Reactor 4.

The miniseries is based in significant part on Pripyat residents’ experiences, as described by Belarusian Nobel winner Svetlana Alexievich in her book Voices from Chernobyl.
