He administers a lethal injection to his beloved sister, freeing her from her lifeless body. He then stages his own death, arranging a boat to disappear into a hurricane in the Atlantic.
In the final scenes, Dexter is revealed to be alive, living under a new identity as a lumberjack in a remote, wintry landscape. He has achieved a hollow, self-imposed exile, utterly alone. The series concludes with him staring blankly into the camera, having traded his humanity for the safety of others, a ghost in a self-made prison.
