Friends is an American television comedy developed by David Crane and Marta Kauffman that aired on NBC for 10 seasons, from September 22, 1994 to May 6, 2004. The show, starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, follows six friends in their 20s and early 30s living in Manhattan, New York City. The initial executive producers were Kevin S. Bright, Kauffman, and Crane.
During November and December 1993, Kauffman and Crane began creating Friends under the working title Insomnia Cafe. They submitted the idea to Bright, and they collaborated on a seven-page program outline for NBC.
After multiple screenplay rewrites and title changes, including Six of One and Friends Like Us, the series was eventually titled Friends. The filming took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions and Warner Bros. Television co-produced the series.
Friends – Season 1 – Summary
The first season introduces the six main characters who live in New York City: Rachel Green, a waitress; Monica Geller, a professional chef; her paleontologist brother, Ross Geller; Phoebe Buffay, a free-spirited masseuse; Joey Tribbiani, a struggling actor; and Chandler Bing, Ross’s college friend whose exact job at a corporation is unknown.
Rachel comes at Central Perk in her wedding gown after abandoning her fiancé, Barry, an orthodontist, at the altar. She moved into her high school buddy Monica’s apartment and starts working as a waitress at Central Perk.
Ross, who has had a crush on Rachel since high school, makes many attempts to express his affections for her. However, several difficulties stand in his way, including his doubts, Rachel’s relationship with an Italian neighbor called Paolo, and the fact that he is expecting a child with his lesbian ex-wife, Carol, who gives birth to Ben late in the season.
Joey never has a consistent girlfriend and frequently sleeps with a number of women. Phoebe is weird and complex, owing primarily to her mother’s death as a youngster and her years living on the streets. However, the group adores her nonetheless.
Chandler breaks up with his lover, Janice (Maggie Wheeler), only to reunite with her throughout the series. Near the end of the season, while Ross is on a paleontology dig in China, Chandler inadvertently reveals that Ross loves Rachel, who subsequently discovers she equally cares for him. The season concludes with Rachel waiting at the airport for Ross, who is returning from China.
Friends – Season 2 – Summary
Rachel meets Ross at the airport, only to learn that he has returned with Julie (Lauren Tom), a friend from graduate school. Rachel’s early attempts to tell Ross that she loves him echo his failed attempts from the previous season.
After he dumps Julie for Rachel, tensions between them rise when Rachel finds Ross’s list of the disadvantages of dating her. They soon start a relationship after Rachel discovers an old home movie of her and Monica’s prom night and learns Ross is going to stand in for her prom date, who nearly dumped her.
Monica is promoted to head chef at the Iridium restaurant, but then sacked for taking presents from a supplier, which is against corporate rules. She is compelled to work as a waitress in a 1950s-style restaurant due to a lack of funds. She begins dating Richard Burke (Tom Selleck), a newly divorced family friend who is 21 years older than her. They finally part up when Monica finds that Richard, who is already a father, does not want any more children.
Joey plays neurosurgeon Dr. Drake Ramoray in a fictitious version of the soap series Days of Our Lives. He moves out of his and Chandler’s flat, prompting Chandler to find a new roommate, Eddie (Adam Goldberg).
Eddie, on the other hand, is obnoxious and mentally unstable. When Joey states in a soap opera magazine interview that he creates many of his own lines, he offends the show’s writer and is killed off. Joey, who can no longer afford his pricey new apartment, moves back in with Chandler, pushing Eddie out.
In the season finale, Chandler converses with an unidentified woman in an internet chat room. When they decide to meet in person, the woman turns out to be Janice.
Friends – Season 3 – Summary
Season 3 features a substantially more serialized structure. Chandler and Janice date for a few episodes before Joey discovers Janice kissing her soon-to-be ex-husband. Chandler, not wanting to damage her family, encourages Janice to return to her husband, but then becomes despondent for several episodes after the split.
Rachel leaves her job at Central Perk and starts working at Bloomingdale’s, an upmarket department store brand. Ross quickly grows envious of her coworker Mark and upset by Rachel’s extended working hours. She is fed up with his incessant jealously and insecurity, and she decides they need to split up.
Ross, heartbroken and slightly inebriated, quickly sleeps with Chloe, “the hot girl from the Xerox place,” prompting Rachel to end their relationship. Although Phoebe originally believes she has no family other than her twin sister Ursula (Lisa Kudrow), she later discovers she has a half-brother, Frank Jr. (Giovanni Ribisi), and her biological mother, Phoebe Abbott (Teri Garr), during the season.
Joey falls in love with his playing partner Kate (Dina Meyer), but is envious because she is dating the director of their production. They have a brief romance, which ends when she accepts an acting position in Los Angeles.
Monica dates rich Pete Becker (Jon Favreau), despite her initial lack of attraction to him. However, she ends her relationship with Pete after he sustains major injuries while attempting to become the Ultimate Fighting Champion and refuses to give up.
Phoebe arranges a date for Ross with her friend, Bonnie (Christine Taylor), provoking Rachel’s jealousy. She attempts to sabotage the relationship by coercing Bonnie into shaving her head bald, and finally reveals to Ross that she still has emotions for him. The season concludes with Ross forced to choose between Rachel and Bonnie.
Friends – Season 4 – Summary
After Ross breaks up with Bonnie in the season 4 opener, he and Rachel temporarily reunite after Ross pretends to read a long letter Rachel wrote for him. However, Ross continues to argue that the two were on a break when he slept with Chloe, and the couple splits up again. Joey is dating Kathy (Paget Brewster), whom Chandler has a crush on. Kathy and Chandler subsequently kiss, causing tension between Chandler and Joey. Joey only forgave Chandler and let him date Kathy after Chandler spent Thanksgiving in a box as punishment.
Chandler’s relationship with Kathy ends after he realizes she cheated on him during an argument. Phoebe leaves her job as a masseuse after having an affair with one of her clients, and she joins Monica, who has become a chef for hire. They soon establish a catering business together, but Monica is given the post of head chef after leaving a nasty review of Allesandro’s restaurant. Despite first feeling threatened by her coworkers’ rage, Monica soon imposes her supremacy in the kitchen. Phoebe becomes a surrogate for her brother and his wife, Alice (Debra Jo Rupp).
Monica and Rachel are forced to transfer flats with Joey and Chandler after losing a wager in a quiz game, but they are able to switch back by bribing them with Knicks season tickets and a one-minute kiss (off-screen). Rachel is relegated to personal shopping after her boss dies. She meets and subsequently romances a customer called Joshua (Tate Donovan).
Ross begins seeing Emily (Helen Baxendale), an English woman, and the two swiftly become engaged. Rachel is unable to cope and quickly proposes to Joshua that they marry, which he declines. In the season finale, the party travels to London for Ross and Emily’s wedding, with the exception of a heavily pregnant Phoebe and Rachel.
Chandler and Monica sleep together, while Rachel, realizing she is still in love with Ross, hurries to London to cancel Ross and Emily’s wedding, but reconsiders when she finds them happy together. Ross accidently mentions Rachel’s name at the altar while performing his vows, surprising both his wife and the guests.
Friends – Season 5 – Summary
Ross and Emily marry, but Emily exits the event, angry and embarrassed. Rachel quickly acknowledges her feelings for Ross, but realizes how silly they are and tells him to concentrate on his marriage to Emily. She develops a crush on her neighbor Danny, and they briefly date before she finds he is too close to his sister.
Monica and Chandler attempt to keep their new relationship a secret from their pals. Phoebe gives birth to triplets in the show’s hundredth episode. She gives birth to a male, Frank Jr. Jr., and two daughters, Leslie and Chandler, the latter of whom was thought to be a boy but was subsequently proved to be a girl.
After weeks of attempting to reach her, Emily agrees to reunite with Ross and relocate to New York if he discontinues all contact with Rachel. Ross accepts, but later goes to supper with his pals, including Rachel. Emily calls Ross, finds Rachel is present, decides she cannot trust him, and terminates their marriage.
Ross vents his rage at work, which results in his being suspended permanently from the museum, and he moves in with Chandler and Joey before finally finding a new apartment across the street from them.
Rachel lands a new job at Ralph Lauren. Phoebe has a brief romance with Gary (Michael Rapaport), a police officer, after discovering his badge and adopting it as her own. Monica and Chandler reveal their romance to their pals, who are surprised and delighted. They resolve to marry on a trip to Las Vegas, but their plans alter after they see Ross and Rachel stumble out of the wedding chapel inebriated.
Friends – Season 6 – Summary
In the season 6 opener, Ross and Rachel’s marriage is revealed to be a drunken mistake that neither recalls until the other friends bring it up. Ross assures Rachel that he would get them an annulment, but then does nothing since he cannot bear having three failed marriages.
By the time Rachel realizes they are still married, an annulment is difficult owing to their past, so they are forced to divorce. Despite multiple hints that they should marry, Monica and Chandler decide to live together, causing Rachel to move in with Phoebe. Joey accepts a new roommate, Janine (Elle Macpherson).
They develop affections for one other and briefly date before Janine criticizes Monica and Chandler, thereby terminating the relationship. After Janine leaves, Joey struggles to pay his expenses, so he finds a job at Central Perk. He quickly obtains a position on the cable TV series Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E., co-starring with a crime-fighting robot.
Ross lands a teaching position at New York University. He dates Elizabeth (Alexandra Holden), a student, even though it is against university regulations. Elizabeth’s father, Paul (Bruce Willis), disapproves of Ross but falls for Rachel, and the two begin dating.
Both relationships quickly end: Elizabeth is too immature for Ross, and Paul, who was previously reticent, opens out emotionally, which Rachel cannot manage. When Phoebe and Rachel’s apartment catches fire, Rachel moves in with Joey, while Phoebe remains with Chandler and Monica, though they subsequently switch.
Monica jokes about putting her name on a reservation list at a museum with a two-year wedding wait time. Chandler panics when he intercepts a phone call from the museum regarding a cancellation; nevertheless, Chandler has been planning to propose while claiming he has no desire to marry.
Chandler’s planned proposal is derailed when Monica’s ex-boyfriend Richard Burke unexpectedly shows up at a posh restaurant. Richard subsequently tells Monica that he wants to marry her and have children. Monica is unhappy with Chandler because she believes his ploy about not wanting to marry.
Chandler feels Monica has abandoned him until he returns home and discovers their apartment decked with candles and her prepared to propose to him. When she feels too emotional to continue, Chandler makes a proposal, which she accepts.
Friends – Season 7 – Summary
The seventh season focuses on Monica and Chandler as they plan their wedding among a variety of challenges. Joey’s TV program, Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E., is canceled, but he is given his former job on Days of Our Lives; the show is retconned with the reveal that Dr. Drake Ramoray has been in a four-year coma and is resurrected with a brain transplant from another character. Rachel now lives permanently at Joey’s because Phoebe’s rebuilt apartment has just one huge bedroom instead of the original two.
Rachel gets promoted to Ralph Lauren and recruits a young assistant, Tag Jones (Eddie Cahill), based only on his appearance, bypassing a more qualified woman. Tag realizes she has emotions for him over Thanksgiving dinner, and they start dating while keeping it from coworkers.
However, on her 30th birthday, Rachel stops their relationship because she realizes Tag is too young and immature, especially if she wishes to follow her marriage timeline.
Chandler panics and hides hours before Monica and Chandler’s wedding ceremony, just as Phoebe and Rachel discover a positive pregnancy test in Monica and Chandler’s bathroom. They presume Monica is pregnant.
Ross and Phoebe track down Chandler and persuade him to return for the ceremony, however he flees again after overhearing Phoebe and Rachel discussing the pregnancy result. He swiftly returns, relishing the concept of parenthood. Monica denies being pregnant during the ceremony; nevertheless, everyone is unaware that the positive pregnancy test is Rachel’s.
Friends – Season 8 – Summary
Season 8 opens with Monica and Chandler’s wedding celebration. Phoebe and Monica discover Rachel’s pregnancy and encourage her to have another test to confirm it. Phoebe initially states the test is negative, disappointing Rachel greatly, but then admits it is positive, claiming Rachel now understands how she truly feels about having a kid.
Ross is finally revealed to be the father, and the season focuses on Rachel’s pregnancy. Rachel and Ross resolve to be co-parents without restarting their love connection; Ross begins dating Mona (Bonnie Somerville), Monica’s Allesandro coworker.
Joey takes Rachel out to calm her anxieties about parenting and discovers he has love feelings for her. While repressing his emotions, he pushes Rachel to stay at Ross’s apartment so that he may be engaged in her pregnancy. Mona is unable to cope with the arrangement and ends her relationship with Ross. Joey informs Ross of his affections for Rachel.
Ross is first outraged, but eventually grants his blessing. Joey tells Rachel that he loves her, but she understands she does not feel the same way, so they stay friends. When Rachel goes into labor, Ross’ mother offers him a family heirloom ring and pushes him to propose to her. Ross hesitates and slips the ring into his jacket, which he subsequently leaves in Rachel’s room.
After Monica joked about having children, she and Chandler decide to establish a family while remaining in the hospital. Rachel delivers baby Emma after a protracted labor in which several other expecting moms, including Janice, are escorted to the delivery room.
Janice subsequently tells her that Ross may not always be there for her and the baby, which makes her sad and worried. When Joey consoles Rachel, the ring falls from Ross’ jacket to the ground. Joey kneels to pick it up, and Rachel, assuming he is proposing, says yes on the spot. Meanwhile, Ross plans to ask Rachel whether she wishes to restart their relationship.

Season nine opens with Ross and Rachel cohabitating with their daughter Emma, after Joey and Rachel resolve the proposal misunderstanding. Chandler leaves Monica after Christmas to pursue a new profession in advertising, first as an unpaid intern at an ad firm and eventually getting recruited as a junior copywriter. Monica and Chandler find that they are physically unable to conceive and, after evaluating many choices, decide to adopt.
Phoebe begins seeing Mike Hannigan (Paul Rudd) for the most of the season, until Mike declares that he never wants to marry again. Phoebe dates her ex-boyfriend from season one, David (Hank Azaria), who intends to propose to her, but Mike proposes first. Phoebe rejects both propositions but returns to Mike, merely seeking confirmation that they have a future together.
Rachel, convinced that her coworker Gavin (Dermot Mulroney) is attempting to steal her job while she is on maternity leave, returns to Ralph Lauren early. She finds out at her birthday celebration that Gavin has affection for her. They kiss but do not pursue a relationship because of her past with Ross.
Meanwhile, after seeing the kiss, Ross retaliates by dating other women. Rachel and Emma move in with Joey after concluding their living situation with Ross is too strange. Rachel develops a crush on him, but is disappointed when he begins dating Charlie (Aisha Tyler), a new palaeontology professor to whom Ross is drawn.
In the conclusion, the gang flies to Barbados to attend Ross’ keynote speech at a conference. Joey and Charlie part up after discovering they have nothing in common. However, after watching Ross and Charlie kiss, he goes to Rachel’s hotel room, and the episode concludes with them kissing.
