Game of Thrones is an HBO fantasy drama television series developed by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire trilogy, the first of which is A Game of Thrones.
The show was shot in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, and Spain. It started on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and finished on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes shown across eight seasons.
Game of Thrones is loosely based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and is set in the fictitious Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos. The show pursues numerous plot threads at the same time.
The first plot arc chronicles a battle for sovereignty of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with other noble families battling for independence from the throne. The second is about the exiled scion’s efforts to recover the throne, and the third is about the coming winter, as well as the fabled animals and ferocious peoples of the North.

Season 4 of Game of Thrones opens with the aftermath of the Red Wedding. The Lannisters celebrate their victory over the Starks, but Tywin Lannister remains wary of lingering threats. Tyrion struggles with his family’s disdain, especially after his nephew Joffrey’s cruel behavior. Meanwhile, Sansa Stark, still trapped in King’s Landing, finds brief solace in Oberyn Martell, the vengeful Dornish prince who arrives for Joffrey’s wedding.
At the Wall, Jon Snow returns after his time with the wildlings but faces suspicion from the Night’s Watch. Mance Rayder’s army gathers strength, and the Night’s Watch prepares for an inevitable attack. Bran Stark continues his journey north, guided by Jojen and Meera Reed, discovering his growing warg abilities and visions of the Three-Eyed Raven.
Daenerys Targaryen rules Meereen, freeing slaves and facing the challenges of leadership. Her dragons grow more uncontrollable, and her decisions strain her alliances. In Essos, Arya Stark and the Hound travel together, their uneasy bond deepening as they encounter violence and betrayal. Arya’s list of names grows, fueling her thirst for vengeance.
Joffrey’s wedding to Margaery Tyrell ends in chaos when he is poisoned and dies in Tyrion’s arms. Tyrion is falsely accused and imprisoned, leading to a dramatic trial where even Shae betrays him. Oberyn Martell volunteers as Tyrion’s champion in a trial by combat but is killed by the Mountain, sealing Tyrion’s fate.
In a desperate act, Tyrion escapes with Jaime’s help, killing Tywin and Shae before fleeing Westeros. Meanwhile, Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne search for Sansa, who escapes King’s Landing with Littlefinger’s help. The season ends with Arya sailing to Braavos, Bran reaching the Three-Eyed Raven, and Daenerys locking away her dragons as her city teeters on rebellion. The Night’s Watch faces the wildling onslaught, setting the stage for greater conflicts to come.
