Game of Thrones is an HBO fantasy drama television series developed by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire trilogy, the first of which is A Game of Thrones.
The show was shot in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, and Spain. It started on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and finished on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes shown across eight seasons.
Game of Thrones is loosely based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and is set in the fictitious Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos. The show pursues numerous plot threads at the same time.
The first plot arc chronicles a battle for sovereignty of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with other noble families battling for independence from the throne. The second is about the exiled scion’s efforts to recover the throne, and the third is about the coming winter, as well as the fabled animals and ferocious peoples of the North.

Season 5 of Game of Thrones opens with tensions rising across Westeros and Essos. In King’s Landing, Cersei Lannister struggles to maintain power as the Tyrells grow more influential. She reinstates the Faith Militant, granting the High Sparrow religious authority, but this backfires when she is arrested for her past sins. Meanwhile, Jaime travels to Dorne to rescue Myrcella, only to face the vengeful Sand Snakes.
In the North, Stannis Baratheon marches toward Winterfell, sacrificing his daughter Shireen to the Lord of Light in a desperate bid for victory. The move horrifies his followers, leading to his eventual defeat and death at the hands of Ramsay Bolton. Sansa Stark, married to Ramsay, endures brutal abuse before escaping with Theon’s help. Jon Snow becomes Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch but faces resistance when he allies with the Wildlings.
Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen rules Meereen but faces rebellion from the Sons of the Harpy. After reopening the fighting pits to appease the nobles, she is attacked during an arena battle. Drogon arrives to save her, but she is left stranded in the wilderness. Tyrion and Jorah, now working together, arrive in Meereen just as the city descends into chaos.
In Braavos, Arya Stark trains with the Faceless Men but struggles to abandon her identity. After disobeying orders and killing Ser Meryn Trant, she is blinded as punishment. The season ends with shocking betrayals: Jon Snow is stabbed by his own men, and Myrcella is poisoned by Ellaria Sand, leaving the fate of many characters uncertain.
