George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal produced the HBO fantasy drama television series House of the Dragon. It is the second television series in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise and a prelude to Game of Thrones (2011-2019). The first season was directed by Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.
Based on elements of Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, the series begins some 100 years after the Targaryen Conquest unites the Seven Kingdoms, over 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s birth. The drama, which stars an ensemble cast, depicts the events leading up to the beginning of House Targaryen’s collapse, a horrific conflict of succession known as the “Dance of the Dragons.”
In October 2019, House of the Dragon was ordered straight to series, with casting commencing in July 2020 and principal filming beginning in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. The series began on August 21, 2022, with 10 episodes in the first season. The sitcom got renewed for a second season five days after its launch. After the first season, Sapochnik stepped down as showrunner, leaving Condal as the sole showrunner for the second season.
Character development, visual effects, screenplay, Ramin Djawadi’s soundtrack, and performances (especially Considine, Smith, D’Arcy, Alcock, and Cooke) were all praised in the first season. The pace, particularly the time leaps, and the gloomy lighting of several sequences, on the other hand, were criticised. On the first day, the series première drew nearly 10 million viewers across linear channels and HBO Max, the most on HBO’s history. The series received the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama in January 2023.
