Ray Drecker is a down-on-his-luck high school basketball coach and history teacher living in Detroit. After a series of personal and financial disasters, including a divorce and his house burning down, Ray attends a self-help seminar. The instructor challenges attendees to identify their one marketable skill. With little else going for him, Ray, prompted by a former fling named Tanya, reluctantly concludes his greatest asset is his prodigious physical endowment.

Tanya, a struggling poet, becomes Ray’s ambitious and sharp-witted business partner. She devises a plan for Ray to use his unique gift to become a male escort, or “happiness consultant,” targeting wealthy, unfulfilled women. She creates his online profile and handles the logistics, positioning him as a source of emotional and physical fulfillment. Together, they navigate the awkward and often perilous world of the sex industry, with Tanya acting as his pimp and protector.

Their first client is a successful, but lonely, corporate executive named Jemma. This initial foray is fraught with anxiety and missteps, but it proves they can generate income. The money offers Ray a glimmer of hope for providing a better life for his teenage twins and saving his dilapidated home. However, the double life begins to create tension, forcing Ray to balance his responsibilities as a father and teacher with his risky new secret profession.

Ray’s personal life remains complicated. His ex-wife, Jessica, is dating a wealthy dermatologist, which exacerbates Ray’s feelings of inadequacy. Meanwhile, his partnership with Tanya deepens, blurring the lines between business and their personal history.
