Season two picks off where season one left off. Soldiers notice Escobar and his entourage just outside the boundaries of ‘La Catedral’ prison but are too afraid of him to conduct an arrest. At the embassy, the United States sends a new ambassador, who involves the CIA.
Escobar experiences minimal change at first because he retains his cartel’s devotion. This commitment, however, begins to wane as Escobar requires more time and resources to hide from the authorities. Among the techniques he employs to escape detection are traveling about town in the trunk of a taxi cab and having teenage lookouts report police activities to him.
Initially, Escobar effortlessly adjusts to his new life, donating money to the community while viciously executing any who attempt to defy his power. The Colombian police and Escobar fight in enormous clashes, causing significant tension and instability throughout Colombia.
Escobar’s Cali cartel rivals establish an unexpected alliance with former cartel members and a CIA-backed anticommunist paramilitary outfit. Agent Peña collaborates with a gang that kills members of Pablo’s organization and claims blame as “Los Pepes”.
After two of Escobar’s senior cartel members are apprehended and expose him, the kingpin flees. He and his bodyguard hide in a safehouse while he celebrates his 44th birthday.
When Pablo attempts to contact his family, the DEA and military locate him down via radio triangulation and corner him on rooftops. Pablo is shot twice in the subsequent gunfight, and while he may have survived his injuries, a Colombian police officer called Trujillo murders him amid screams of “Viva Colombia!”
Tata, Escobar’s wife, contacts the Cali cartel for assistance in departing the country. Peña returns to the US expecting to be penalized by the disciplinary committee for his affiliation with Los Pepes. However, he is startled to be requested to offer intelligence against the Cali cartel, hinting his future engagement with the DEA.
