In the first season of the American version of “Secrets and Lies,” Ryan Phillippe’s character Ben Crawford discovers a little kid called Tom Murphy’s body in the woods close to his neighborhood. As Ben attempts to clear his reputation and learn the truth about what really happened to Tom, he is entangled in a convoluted web of secrets and lies and becomes the primary suspect in Tom’s murder.
Detective Andrea Cornell, portrayed by Juliette Lewis, takes the lead in the investigation and is unwavering in her resolve to find the murderer. Ben’s life starts to fall apart as suspicion mounts, his community turns against him, and he comes under media and community scrutiny.
Throughout the course of the season, a number of people are dragged into the inquiry, each with their own secrets and motivations, including Ben’s wife Christy (KaDee Strickland), his neighbor Jess (Natalie Martinez), and his closest friend Dave (Dan Fogler).
As Ben fights to maintain his innocence while facing the sinister realities concealed in his seemingly perfect suburban neighborhood, the tension grows. As the mystery gets deeper, twists and discoveries appear, culminating in a surprising and dramatic denouement that reveals the truth about Tom’s murder and the secrets that split the town apart.
