Westworld is an American dystopian science fiction western television series developed by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, which premiered on HBO on October 2, 2016. It is partially based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name, which he wrote and directed, and its 1976 sequel, Futureworld.

Westworld, a fictitious, technologically sophisticated Wild West-themed amusement park staffed by robotic “hosts,” is where the tale begins. The park caters to high-paying guests who may explore their wildest dreams without fear of punishment from the hosts, who are programmed not to hurt humans.

Later in the series, the scenario shifts to the actual world in the mid-twentieth century, where people’s lives are guided and controlled by a strong artificial intelligence known as Rehoboam.

Showrunners were Nolan and Joy. The second, third, and fourth seasons will be released in April 2018, March 2020, and June 2022, respectively. Nolan and Joy were in discussions with HBO to develop a fifth and final season. However, HBO confirmed in November 2022 that the series had been cancelled. On December 18, 2022, the series was withdrawn from HBO Max.

Delos Inc. maintains various amusement parks in the 2050s, including the American Old West-themed Westworld. The “Hosts,” biomechanical robots indistinguishable from humans, occupy each habitat. The Hosts are programmed to satisfy the guests’ every need, and will engage in — and be subjected to — any type of violent and/or sexual behaviour.

However, the programming of the Hosts prevents them from harming any living thing or allowing the guests to be harmed. The park’s operators develop tales for these Hosts to act out while interacting with guests, but when each narrative is done, the Hosts’ memories are erased. Delos Inc. claims that because the Hosts are machines and hence incapable of feeling pain, they cannot be seriously injured in the same manner that humans would be.
