Game of Thrones – Season 1 – Summary
The plot is set in a fantasy universe, mostly on the continent Westeros, with one storyline taking place on Essos, a region to the east. The season, like the novel, begins with nobleman Eddard “Ned” Stark, the Warden of the North, who is requested to become the King’s Hand (chief counsellor) to his lifelong friend, King Robert Baratheon.
Ned is on the hunt for the killer of his predecessor, Jon Arryn. He unearths horrible truths about the powerful Lannister family, including Robert’s queen, Cersei, that his predecessor died attempting to reveal. Following Robert’s death, Ned is arrested for treason. Robb, Ned’s eldest son, leads a rebellion against the Lannisters.
Ned is assassinated by Cersei’s ruthless adolescent son, King Joffrey Baratheon. Meanwhile, in Essos, the exiled son of the previous king, Viserys Targaryen, compels his sister Daenerys to marry a Dothraki warrior in return for an army to pursue his claim to the Iron Throne. Viserys dies at the conclusion of the season, and Daenerys becomes the Mother of Dragons.
