Game of Thrones is an HBO fantasy drama television series developed by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire trilogy, the first of which is A Game of Thrones.
The show was shot in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, and Spain. It started on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and finished on May 19, 2019, with 73 episodes shown across eight seasons.
Game of Thrones is loosely based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and is set in the fictitious Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos. The show pursues numerous plot threads at the same time.
The first plot arc chronicles a battle for sovereignty of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with other noble families battling for independence from the throne. The second is about the exiled scion’s efforts to recover the throne, and the third is about the coming winter, as well as the fabled animals and ferocious peoples of the North.

Tyrion welcomes Prince Oberyn Martell to King’s Landing, and tensions rise as Oberyn seeks vengeance for his sister’s death. Daenerys continues her conquest of Slaver’s Bay, heading toward Meereen. Arya reunites with the Hound and takes revenge on a Lannister soldier. At the Wall, Jon Snow faces suspicion after his time with the wildlings.
Joffrey and Margaery’s wedding turns deadly when the king is poisoned and dies in front of the court. Cersei immediately blames Tyrion, leading to his arrest. Sansa escapes King’s Landing with Littlefinger’s help. Meanwhile, Bran and his group are attacked by mutineers from the Night’s Watch, but Coldhands rescues them.
Tyrion demands a trial by combat, and Oberyn volunteers to fight for him against Gregor Clegane. The duel is brutal, and Oberyn nearly wins before being killed in a horrifying moment. Tyrion is sentenced to death. Daenerys takes control of Meereen but struggles with ruling justly. Jon Snow defends the Wall against a wildling attack, proving his loyalty to the Night’s Watch.
Jaime helps Tyrion escape, but Tyrion kills Shae and Tywin before fleeing. Arya leaves the Hound to die and sails to Braavos. Brienne and Podrick continue their search for Sansa, while Littlefinger reveals his true plans to her. In the North, Bran reaches the Three-Eyed Raven, and Stannis arrives at the Wall to aid in the fight against the wildlings. The season ends with new power shifts and looming threats beyond the Wall.
