The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural adolescent drama television series created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on L. J. Smith’s book series of the same name. The show debuted on The CW on September 10, 2009, and ended on March 10, 2017, after 171 episodes aired across eight seasons.
The series is set in the imaginary town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, which has a haunted past. It follows Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a young girl who has recently lost both parents in a car accident, as she falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire called Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), whom she mistakenly believes is simply a normal human.
As Stefan’s enigmatic elder brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) returns to Mystic Falls with a plot to bring back their prior love, Katherine Pierce, Elena’s doppelgänger, their relationship becomes increasingly complicated.
Although Damon initially resents his brother for forcing him to become a vampire, he eventually reconciles with Stefan and falls in love with Elena, resulting in a love triangle between the three. As they fight many antagonists and threats to their community, including Katherine, both brothers seek to defend Elena. As the series progresses, flashbacks reveal the Salvatore brothers’ pasts, as well as the town’s history and mysteries.
